Everybody! Whether you’re struggling to get sober or have a few years under your belt. Whether you have a strong faith or are rejecting the one that was given you. If you feel that something is missing. If you feel alone in your sobriety. If you don’t understand how to do life. If the idea of a Higher Power or God appeals to you but you don’t know where to go to explore this. If you hear others talking of finding peace and serenity, this was my route to that. If fear and anxiety have become more significant in your life than they were before. If you’re curious about God and what a spiritual practice might be. If you want a place to start exploring possibilities via basic, simple practices.
We will work through the approach that I used in developing my own spiritual connection and relationship with my God/Higher Power, including how I integrated it into developing my sense of self and learning to live with love.
The course consists of the following:
- seven live and recorded 60 minute calls
- 42 daily reflections sent by email and available in both print and audio
- exercises for contemplation
- a private online community to share observations and reflections.
Week One
Exploring our starting point and history with God to identify how we can change this, introducing prayer as an action.
Week Two
Beginning to choose our version of God or a Higher Power and how to invite it into our lives.
Week Three
What does it mean to have a relationship with a spiritual being, sharing my process and how can that support our sobriety.
Week Four
This will be a week to reflect and consolidate on the first half of the course, allowing the subconscious to absorb and process.
Week Five
Introducing values as a way of developing purpose and finding a way forward.
Week Six
What is love, how does love feel, how do I love, how does it show up for me, how can I create it?
Final Call
In this call, we reflect on all the practices and add in gratitude and trust.
Daily Reflections
Each morning of the course you will receive a written and narrated daily reflection building on the principles and practices introduced on the call. These support the development of your spiritual connection, providing a regular gentle and encouraging space and the building of a daily practice. They take the concepts that are introduced during the call and break them down into bite size pieces when they may feel big or inaccessible.
Community
The Finding Faith in Sobriety space will be a closed and private group where everyone will be able to comment and share on each of the calls and daily refection posts as well as participate in a private chat.
The shift from devout atheist to a silver-cross wearing holder of faith was fundamental to how I began to stay sober. It enabled all the other pieces to come together and has been the keystone ever since. It is not only how I got sober, it’s how I stay sober. I have moved from a life where I was barely surviving to thriving. My God helps me sit with acceptance and find peace. I can let go and let God with all the things that life puts on my path. It has been central to the leaving of my marriage, my house, my job, starting all of it again. It is not a religious God, I have neither the patience nor desire to research and forge a connection with any religion. I also don’t need to. I have a God in my life, this is how it works.
All things life have become lighter and feasible. Sitting with the initial acceptance of self, moving towards self-love, letting go of resentments, fears, anger. It changed all my relationships especially the one that I had with myself. This was how I was going to learn about who I was without being terrified of ‘what’ I was going to find.
My faith is my cornerstone, my absolute. Hence the course. I want to share this. I want to provide a space where others can explore how this might work for them or not. There is no judgement. I will share my experience and process in a detailed way that gives opportunity for consideration.
"Find Faith in Sobriety is exactly what I needed to support my commitment to getting sober. For me, this course was critical in my journey to becoming sober and gave me additional tools to support my sobriety."
"Louise did such an amazing job at delivering nearly impossible material in an easy to understand and engaging way. So non-judgmental, expansive, approachable, inviting."
"I would highly recommend doing this course. If you have ever wondered where your spiritual self may be - this course will help surface your spiritual self who is full of faith and love. It has helped vastly helped my recovery by enriching my understanding of my god and higher power."
"I was drawn to Louise’s course as a “spiritual person” with no actual sustaining habits or routines. Her straightforward telling of her journey with supporting readings and simple practices served as an invitation which I accepted. While praying each day was quite awkward at first, as I kept going, shaping it in my own ways – breathing my life and my words into it – it has become essential to the start of each day. Louise’s story and guidance in the course was the impetus for me to begin my own daily routine of learning to listen and to trust – quite a big and work-in-progress word for me – and be open."
"This class reminded me how important connection to my faith is for me. It also introduced me to the practice of a morning prayer. I began to start my day with the daily reflection and it has become an important part of how I now start my day. Louise is an inspiring and welcoming speaker and class instructor."
"Finding Faith in Sobriety - Helped me build a stronger relationship with my Higher Power (God). I now understand how to pause, pray and turn life over to God. These were all reasons I drank in the past. I am grateful for this gift - I say prayers while walking, while driving, and throughout the day. This helps me stay connected to the here and now, what I have control over vs what I need to turn over. Thank you Louise for guiding me through this course. I will be back for more when you offer the course again."
"I appreciated this course to help me think critically about integrating faith and values when addressing my sobriety journey. Through Christ, Louise showed love, patience, and self-control. She is an agent of grace, an ambassador for Christ, that helped me explore my values. I appreciated the focus on faith in all spheres of life. I used this course as a roadmap for guidance while exploring my faith, values, behavior, and identity through Louise's gentle presence. It helped me learn to articulate my own values and live in congruence with them. My hope is strengthened with faith through the difficult journey of recovery."
"'Finding Faith in Sobriety' offers an expansive and supportive small-group community to explore one's beliefs, values and relationship with God. Louise is the perfect guide for this course, generously walking us through her own experiences and practices that have served her over the years.
This is not a course that supplies students with tried-and-true answers; rather, it is a deep dive into simple but profound daily practices, affirmations, and open-ended questions aimed at getting to know ourselves like never before.
Louise does not hand over an "x marks the spot" map but instead helps students locate their own compasses and ignite their own torches to embark on their own individual paths.
For three decades, I had largely written off having any sort of higher power in my life; I figured faith was something you either had or didn't, never grasping that I held the power to define, cultivate and strengthen my unique relationship with God.
As a young girl, I'd resisted religion as it never felt true or rewarding to me; I struggled to embrace what I'd been told and taught, which only left me feeling secretly flawed and fraudulent in some way. Rather than grow more curious and reflective, these negative feelings pushed me further away from any sort of spiritual growth until that door closed.
With each passing year in sobriety, I have felt called to revisit that door. I began to see that I had confused religion with spirituality, and I longed for a safe space to begin asking myself questions I didn't have room or time for before. I will be taking Louise's course a second time, as I know I am at the beginning of something deeply personal and enriching. And it's a joy to be surrounded by fellow like-minded seekers and a wise, compassionate guide whom I've come to trust so very much. "
"I think the appealing way the course is presented as your story makes it easier to ingest. You are very gentle in reminding the participants that this is YOURS. Also the encouragement to say prayers out loud is good for me since I resist it due to school prayers I recited without understanding the words.
I chose FAITH as my word for the year 2025 because I need to be reminded to practice it each day. It feels like "psychic acupuncture" - I am not sure how it works but it does! I pray words that someone else gave me to an unknown greatness I call God or sometimes Mel (Mother Earth Love). It allows me to loosen my grip on controlling people & outcomes. When I pay attention, slow down and pray, I see 'miracles' every day. One day at a time, my life is getting more beautiful."
