Who is this course for?

Everybody! One of my first observations in AA meetings was noticing that people with a creative outlet had a much more attractive recovery - the artists, the writers, the gardeners. These were the people that called to me, whose sobriety I wanted.  My observations and learning since have led me to believe that developing a authentic connection to self is dependent on connecting with the creativity that exists in all of us, and that in sobriety, especially, we need to learn who we are for a richer, more satisfying sober life. I have come to realise that my sobriety was actually a gift, an opportunity to understand what life was about but in order to do so, I needed to find me first.  However, you also don’t need to be sober in order to do this work, it’s not a pre-requisite. I am loving to see that science is catching up too and beginning to prove the healing power of the arts and its role in supporting our mental health.

Morning Pages has been one of my core practices for almost ten years and I always encourage those that I work with to develop it as a daily practice. There is a considerable amount of work in this book which, alongside morning pages, is often quoted by successful creatives as having been a key support to them in their work. What is less well known is that Julia has been sober for almost 50 years and developed The Artists Way as the result of her own sobriety practices.

This course is for those who are new to her work and those who are already using some or all of it. I will join you as we progress through the coursework together with opportunity to share our experiences both in community and in small, intimate cluster groups.

Programme Details

We will work directly through the book The Artist’s Way.  Each week I will share a video of my observations and reflections of the coursework, as well as facilitating a one hour call for a brief Q&A followed by small breakout rooms of 4-5 people for sharing the experience of doing the work. The programme will be facilitated through a private platform which will contain all the material. I will be sending out daily prompts and additional reflections each morning for all twelve weeks which will include a weekly check-in every Saturday.

All of the Q&As will be recorded and access to all the material will available for one year. The online community space opens on Monday August 24th, there will be a welcome video and the opportunity to introduce yourself. Our live calls will be weekly on Fridays @ 9am PT/Noon ET/5pm BST, starting on September 4th 2026 until our closing call on Friday 27th November.
The programme consists of:
- weekly instructional videos
- weekly tasks and exercises
- weekly breakout rooms/cluster group sessions (first 15 mins Q&A recorded) to support sharing of experiences
- daily reflections sent by email and available in both print and audio
- weekly check in email
- a private community to share coursework, observations and reflections.

Curriculum

Week One

Recovering a Sense of Safety

This week initiates your creative recovery. You may feel both giddy and defiant, hopeful and skeptical. The readings, tasks, and exercises aim at allowing you to establish a sense of safety, which will enable you to explore your creativity with less fear.

Week Two

Recovering a Sense of Identity

This week addresses self-definition as a major component of creative recovery. You may find yourself drawing new boundaries and staking out new territories as your personal needs, desires, and interests announce themselves. The essays and tools are aimed at moving you into your personal identity, a self-defined you.

Week Three

Recovering a Sense of Power

This week may find you dealing with unaccustomed bursts of energy and sharp peaks of anger, joy, and grief. You are coming into your power as the illusory hold of your previously accepted limits is shaken. You will be asked to consciously experiment with spiritual open-mindedness.

Week Four

Recovering a Sense of Integrity

This week may find you grappling with changing self-definition. The essays, tasks, and exercises are designed to catapult you into productive introspection and integration of new self-awareness. This may be both very difficult and extremely exciting for you.

Week Five

Recovering a Sense of Possibility

This week you are being asked to examine your payoffs in remaining stuck. You will explore how you curtail your own possibilities by placing limits on the good you can receive. You will examine the cost of settling for appearing good instead of being authentic. You may find yourself thinking about radical changes, no longer ruling out your growth by making others the cause of your constriction.

week six

Recovering a Sense of Abundance

This week you tackle a major creative block - money. You are asked to really look at your own ideas around God, money, and creative abundance. The essays will explore the ways in which your attitudes limit abundance and luxury in your current life. You will be introduced to counting, a blockbusting tool for clarity and right use of funds. This week may feel volatile.

week seven

Recovering a Sense of Connection

We turn this week to the practice of right attitudes for creativity. The emphasis is on your receptive as well as active skills. The essays, exercises, and tasks aim at excavating areas of genuine creative interest as you connect with your personal dreams.

week eight

Recovering a Sense of Strength

This week tackles another major creative block - time. You will explore the ways in which you have used your perception of time to preclude taking creative risks. You will identify immediate and practical changes you can make in your current life. You will excavate the early conditioning that may have encouraged you to settle for far less than you desire creatively.

week nine

Recovering a Sense of Compassion

This week finds us facing the internal blocks to creativity. It may be tempting to abandon ship at this point. Don't! We will explore and acknowledge the emotional difficulties that beset us in the past as we made creative efforts. We will undertake healing the shame of past failures. We will gain in compassion as we reparent the frightened artist child who yearns for creative accomplishment. We will learn tools to dismantle emotional blocks and support renewed risk.

week ten

Recovering a Sense of Self-Protection

This week we explore the perils that can ambush us on our creative path. Because creativity is a spiritual issue, many of the perils are spiritual perils. In the essays, tasks, and exercises of this week, we search out the toxic patterns we cling to that block our creative flow.

week eleven

Recovering a Sense of Autonomy

This week we focus on our artistic autonomy. We examine the ongoing ways in which we must nurture and accept ourselves as artists. We explore the behaviors that can strengthen our spiritual base and, therefore, our creative power. We take a special look at the ways in which success must be handled in order that we not sabotage our freedom.

week twelve

Recovering a Sense of Faith

In this final week, we acknowledge the inherently mysterious spiritual heart of creativity. We address the fact that creativity requires receptivity and profound trust - capacities we have developed through our work in this course. We set our creative aims and take a special look at last-minute sabotage. We renew our commitment to the use of the tools.

What else has been said about it?

"A fascinating and fun twelve-week-long programme of exercises and explorations to help you loosen up your artistic self... Three times in the last decade I've committed to doing The Artist's Way and each time I've learned something important and surprising about myself and my work... Without The Artist's Way, there would have been no Eat, Pray, Love"
ELIZABETH GILBERT

"This is a book that addresses a delicate and complex subject. For those who will use it, it is a valuable tool to get in touch with their own creativity."
MARTIN SCORSESE

"I picked this book up for the first time when I was twenty-one years old. It completely changed my life. I did it again ten years ago and the impact was again life-altering. Something in my soul was stirring me to come back to it. So ... here we go ... I’m excited to meet myself on this path again"
KERRY WASHINGTON

"I absolutely love this book... It's a really good starting point to discover what lights you up"
EMMA GANNON

"This book has been revolutionary in my creative life. It's a must-read for every artist"
ITO AGHAYERE

"Cameron has a knack for anthropomorphising emotions themselves and reframing negative thought... As she has done for nearly three decades, Cameron is simply encouraging her readers to be a bit more open, more patient, and kinder to themselves"
NEW YORKER

"Unleashing our creative potential is the key to a more meaningful life"
PSYCHOLOGIES

"If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It's about learning to pay attention"
ANNE LAMOTT

"So inspiring"
